Does the wireless internet on the iPhone 3G (unlocked) work with Tmobile?
I want to buy the iPhone 3G but don’t know if it still has any sort of wireless internet if i use it with T-mobile.
“Wireless internet” is a little vague, do you mean WiFi (where you connect to a nearby base station, like with your computer) or cellular data (like how Blackberries check e-mail)? If you mean WiFi, then yes. If you mean cellular data, then yes, but with a caveat: T-Mobile has EDGE data, but no 3G. 3G is supposedly coming October 1st, 2008, but it’ll be in fewer areas than any of the other providers and it’s unclear how its speed will compare to said providers.
However, you should probably know beforehand that getting an unlocked 3G is neither cheap nor easy. First off, unless you’re buying a (very expensive) unlocked iPhone 3G from overseas, you’re going to have a hard time unlocking an iPhone 3G. First, to get one here in the U.S. you have to get one from an AT&T, Apple or Best Buy store, and they won’t let you have one until you’ve agreed to a two year contract with AT&T. To get out of that, you have to pay an “early termination fee” of $175. You’ll also have already paid for a month of service and an activation fee, which will be at least $100. So, just to get the phone and be removed from any obligation from AT&T will cost you, at minimum, $475. If you want the 16GB model, tack on another $100.
Now, to use it on T-Mobile, you have to unlock the phone. This is easy on the original iPhone, you just download an app like AnySIM and run it, and presto! You’re unlocked. However, as of this moment none of them work on the iPhone 3G. With the iPhone 3G, you have to do a more complicated hardware unlock using a SIM card adapter.
